I love the sketch on the TV show Little Britain with the bored travel agent moronically trotting out the phrase: 'Computer says no'. Could there have been a better piece of comedic writing that crystallises the way computers have become positioned as the all-seeing eye and the final arbiter on almost every decision in the modern world? As a society, we want more, quicker, cheaper and more securely than ever before. Technology enables this to happen. In the main it's great. We've probably all had encounters with the artificial intelligence being used prevalently in the financial world. Our buying habits are continually monitored so that should our card or card number fall into the wrong hands, a crack team of international fraud experts whirl into action, unleash the dogs, throw a net, let off a smoke bomb and we're saved from financial ruin.
