Pros and Cons of E-Prescribing in Community Pharmacies

Electronic prescribing, or "e-prescribing," is not new to the world of pharmacy; however, it has rapidly evolved over the last decade to accommodate the growth and complexities of health care in the United States. E-prescribing was brought into the spotlight in 2003 with the approval of the Medicare Modernization Act (MMA). The MMA included a formal definition of e-prescribing, and although it did not require providers or pharmacies to adopt e-prescribing, it did offer a set of uniform standards for appropriate implementation and use.
