If proof was ever needed that sustainability pays, then WA's booming sandalwood industry is it. With exports worth more than 20 million dollar a year, our home-grown product doesn't even rank with the world's best. Far from it: top WA sandalwood fetches about US 10,000 dollar a tonne, a pittance compared with US40,000 dollar/t for the Asia-Pacific variety and US73,000 dollar/t for premium Indian sandalwood. Yet Bibra Lake firm Wescorp International, through its subsidiaries Wescorp Sandalwood, Wescorp Pacific Sandalwood and New Mountain Sandalwood, processes more than 60 per cent of the world's supply.
