WA — World food bowl?

Some 25 years ago, an American orchardist who was visiting WA told me that he thought WA could become "one of the great food bowls of the world". As the only first-world, developed country with extensive tropical areas, Australia has a head start in such matters. Western Australia, the largest State in the world, is also the only such territory which extends from the tropics down to temperate regions.
