The first step in applying Lean to this area is to ensure that there is at least a senior management sponsor or champion who truly understands Lean thinking. Ideally Lean thinking should be one of the competencies of every modern senior manager, though this is not always the case.Notice my use of 'Lean thinking' rather than 'Lean manufacturing'. A cross-functional multidisciplinary approach is essential to realise the maximum benefits and that means everyone must be involved. From sales and technical, to HR and finance, everyone must have a Lean mindset.
