UK announces tougher rig inspections

Energy secretary Chris Huhne has announced an urgent review of UK inspections of North Sea oil rigs in response to the Deepwater Horizon crisis in the Gulf of Mexico. The Department of Energy and Climate Change stated that the current system, which employs just six inspectors to monitor standards on 24 drilling rigs and 280 oil and gas production facilities, was fit for purpose but in light of the spill it was strengthening the regime further.
