Run by the Engineering Council, the Neighbourhood Engineers Programme is targeted at schools across the UK, with the long-term aim of raising the profile of the engineering profession among young people and reversing the acute shortfall of quality engineering recruits in some sectors of the profession.The programme increases young people's scientific and technical capability and raises their awareness of the importance of engineering to the economy and society. Around 8,000 engineers and technicians are currently involved in the programme, giving their time in approximately 2,000 secondary and 850 primary schools.
