Outsourcing - third party politics

Is outsourcing a good idea? Or should companies be wary of it in view of the potential risks involved, especially from an information security perspective? On the plus side, there are what appear to be significant advantages to be had. These include cost savings, efficiency improvements, the addition of outside expertise to the company and the opportunity to potentially expand into new markets. On the other hand, security, legal issues, loss of internal knowledge, staff morale and cultural disparity are all areas that need to be considered and properly risk-assessed if a company is to outsource effectively and remain in control of this aspect of its business.
