Electrical waste is one of the fastest growing types of waste in the UK and most of it ends up in land-fill sites. It can cause pollution if it is not disposed of properly as many of the components in this type of equipment are hazardous. The WEEE Directive aims to reduce the size of this problem by encouraging reuse and recycling, better design and manufacturing of the product and reducing the volume of the waste ending up in landfill. It also introduces requirements to mark electrical products with the symbol of a wheelie bin with a cross through it to advise consumers that it cannot be disposed of in the usual manner. The directive sets targets for the amount of WEEE to be collected separately from private households and requires all separately collected WEEE to be treated.
