The 5Ss are a housekeeping tool to help lean and organise the work place, and focus on continually improving order, cleanliness and standardisation. The mysterious 'Ss' themselves originate from Japanese words: seiri, or sort - to separate needed tools, parts, and instructions from the unneeded and to remove the latter seiton, or set in order, or 'straighten' - to neatly arrange and identify parts and tools for ease of use seiso, or shine - to clean and inspect " seiketsu, or standardise - to require as the norm that everyone sort, set in order, and shine at frequent (daily) intervals to keep the workplace in perfect condition shitsuke, or sustain - to maintain the 5S gains workers should be encouraged and trained to form the habit of always following the first four Ss
