Arginine-rich peptides is an important category of therapeutic peptides covering different indications such as cancer, anti-infectious diseases as well as drug delivery systems (several cell penetrating peptides contain arginines in their sequences). The work-up after synthesis of peptides containing unprotected arginine residues can be very troublesome due to the low solubility in organic solvents. However, their tetraphenylborate (TPB) salt is insoluble in water but soluble in a wide range of organic solvents, allowing an extractive and cost effective work-up (Scheme 1).
