QA scare at nuclear fuel plant

British Nuclear Fuels Ltd (BNFL) endangered its ISO 9002 certification when it emerged that falsification had taken place in the quality control procedures of the mixed oxide nuclear fuel (MOX) Demonstration Facility at Sellafield.Nuclear reprocessor and generator BNFL faced being stripped of its ISO 9000 certification late last year after it admitted it had falsified quality control records monitoring the production of highly-dangerous MOX fuel. The discovery; shortly before one of the plant's regular audits, resulted in all works at the plant being suspended while an internal management investigation was carried out.
