Boron Tribromide:A Useful Reagent for Chemical Syntheses

Boron tribromide,as a member of the family of boron trihalides,is finding greater use in industrial chemical syntheses.It is an excellent demethylating or dealkylating agent for ethers,particularly in the production of Pharmaceuticals.Additionally,this Lewis acid catalyst finds applications in olefin polymerization and in Friedel-Crafts chemistry.The electronics industry uses boron tribromide(BBr3)as a source of boron in pre-deposition processes for doping in the manufacture of semi-conductors.In this paper we describe the properties,manufacturing processes,chemistries,and applications of boron tribromide.
