Synthesis is a wonderful word of Greek origin which conveys the idea of composition equally well for pieces of fine art such as poetry,painting or music,or of chemical formulations.In its most powerful meaning,it conveys the art and science of constructing molecules of all kinds from atoms or groups of atoms.As a discipline,chemical synthesis was born in the nineteenth century and flourished in the twentieth century to great heights.Despite its short history,however,chemical synthesis has changed the way we live today - and some will say the way we die as well,for miracle drugs (fruits of this science) save countless lives,alleviate untold pain,and constantly extend our lifespan to unprecedented levels.
