摘要

EC is pleased with recovery plan, while environmentalists sound alarm, saying regional commissions ignore their scientific advisors and order only minor cuts in allowable catches. Yellowfin and bigeye tuna catches in the Central and Western Pacific will be reduced, but only by 10% a year, the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) decided Dec. 12 at its annual conference in Busan, South Korea. The decision drew an immediate outcry from environmentalists, particularly since it came only a few weeks after similar actions by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT) and the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC). All three bodies apparently rejected pleas by their own scientific advisors for deeper cuts.
