First it was an Italian thing. Then it was an American thing. Now it's a German thing. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the frozen pizza in Germany. Dr. Oetker was first on the market in 1970, and its growth since then has been downright phenomenal. Pizza is now the number one frozen product in the country, and Germany is the number one pizza market in Europe, according to Food for Thought, the Swiss market research firm, which ranks the country far ahead of its nearest rival, the UK. Becausethe market is so huge, it is fiercely contested, and the leading players are fighting each other hard. Consolidation is the big news at present. The two leaders, with 72% of the market between them, have become bigger yet by striking deals with competitors.
