Superstorm bowls over Northeast, idling paper mills, plants with power outages; demand concerns rise

Amidst widespread energy and transportation chaos in the Mid-Atlantic region following catastrophic Superstorm Sandy this week, paper industry contacts reported disruptions to mill and converting plant operations particularly in the hard-hit states of New York and New Jersey. Most of the impacts appeared due to power outages and rail, highway and port restrictions, with minimal reports of damage to facilities. A bigger concern to paper suppliers was the disruption to customers and to demand across the heavily concentrated Northeast region, as well as the impact to recovered paper generation and collection.
