AbitibiBowater plans to permanently close one of four paper machines at its 540,000 tonnes/yr Baie Comeau, QC, newsprint mill at the end of next month, trimming almost 120,000 tonnes/yr from its 3.24 million tonnes/yr newsprint production capacity. More than 90 jobs will be lost in the May 28 closure, which a company official said would lead to lower costs at the mill. A Communications, Energy and Paper-workers Union of Canada (CEP) union official denounced the closure.
