Pulp and paper rail traffic slows in 3Q; lumber surges

North American pulp and paper railroad traffic eased slightly in the third quarter while lumber and wood products volume picked up, according to statistics from the Assn of American Railroads. September pulp and paper freight at 38,367 carloads was down 1.9% from 2010 and for the third quarter at 124,636 carloads was 1.2% lower. At the end of the second quarter, volume was running 7% higher and in the first quarter was up 9.3%. US pulp and paper traffic in the quarter was up 1.7% from 2010 and Canada was 6% lower.
