MeadWestvaco to close SBS PM at Evadale permanently cutting US capacity by 3.3%

MeadWestvaco (MWV) will permanently shut the No. 2 paper machine at its Evadale, TX, solid bleached sulphite (SBS) mill later this year, the company announced this week. The mill's 200,000 tons/yr PM No. 4 and 340,000 tons/yr PM No. 5 will continue to operate. The 200,000 tons/yr PM 2, which runs food service and general packaging grades, will cease operations by the end of the third quarter. Its closure represents about 3.3% of the 6.1 million tons/yr US SBS market, and leaves the company with about 1.5 million tons annual SBS paperboard capacity.
