Strong loonie, high costs continue to spell trouble for Canadian companies in 2Q

Higher prices for most pulp and paper products could not offset rising input costs, slower economic growth, and a continued strong Canadian dollar during the second quarter as major Canadian pulp, paper, and forest products companies posted improved results compared with first quarter but continued their string of unprofitable quarters to 15. Yet, results were better than the industry's dismal performance six months ago during fourth quarter 2007, and improved sequentially in terms of earnings.
