The largest newsprint producer in North America,Abitibi-Consolidated,told customers Aug.17 that it is reducing its Aug.1 price increase to 20/tonne from 40/tonne for standard 30-lb newsprint.There was no immediate reaction by the other major newsprint suppliers that had also announced 40/tonne hikes for this month.However,sources said on Aug.18 they expected other producers would revise their price increases downwards to remain competitive with Abitibi-Consolidated.
