The outcome of Abitibi-Consolidated's in-depth operational review is to close 344,000 mtpy of newsprint capacity and permanently idle another 150,000 mtpy.Factoring in a previously announced conversion project,by the end of the year the company-the largest newsprint producer based on capacity in North America-will have cut more than 600,000 mtpy of newsprint or more than 4.5% of North American newsprint capacity.
