Falling circulation,lighter basis weight newsprint cause consumption drop,report says

The 4.5% decline in North American newsprint consumption in the first five months of 2005 was so sharp that the Pulp and Paper Products Council published a special research note to try to explain the sudden fall.The report said an ongoing drop in U.S.daily newspaper average circulation as well as a move by publishers to lighter basis weight newsprint caused the consumption decline.Because some data needed to explain the downturn is only available quarterly,the PPPC focused on the first quarter 2005 drop of 4.8% in consumption by U.S.daily newspapers.Factors studied were falling advertising lineage,conservation measures,declining circulation,and increasing use of lower basis weight newsprint.
