Domtar announced a joint venture with Canadian forestry research institute FPInno-vations to generate a metric tonne per day of nanocrystalline cellulose, a nascent pulp mill byproduct sometimes called "the digital version of wood." Domtar and FPInnovations, a Canadian non-profit forestry products research center, plan to invest around $40 million towards retrofitting a hardwood kraft pulp mill in Windsor, QC, to produce the material.
