International Paper (IP) closed an uncoated freesheet (UFS) paper machine at its Franklin, VA, mill earlier than expected last Saturday, without employee layoffs. The PM No. 6, which produces 223,000 tons/yr of UFS grades, was slated to close next spring, IP said on Oct. 22. An IP official said the PM 6 closure was intended for this year and said the Franklin mill's PM 1, which produces coated paperboard and bristols, will close before yearend. Two remaining UFS machines, Nos. 4 and 5, with combined capacity of 318,000 tons/yr, will close as scheduled next year.
