Kruger and Tembec slate more summer downtime

Citing a strengthening Canadian dollar and weak demand, Canadian papermakers Kruger and Tembec both said they would reduce production further over the summer. The companies' curtailments will cut a combined 50,000 tonnes of newsprint and coated and uncoated mechanical paper output. Privately owned Kruger said it would cut 26,500 tonnes of newsprint production, 7,500 tonnes of coated paper, 4,500 tonnes of super-calendered paper and 2,000 tonnes of directory paper by idling operations at Brompton, Trois-Rivieres and Wayagamack mills in Quebec for up to three weeks. Tembec said it would reduce newsprint production by an estimated 11,000 tonnes by idling its Pine Falls, MB, newsprint mill for a month.
