摘要

Dedicated commercial microwave reactors enable rapid and safe, reproducible organic synthesis under controlled conditions. Applications of microwave heating for the synthesis and use of ionic liquids are discussed with literature examples. Ionic liquids have no effective vapour pressure, and their use as solvents impose few pressure constraints regardless of temperature. They are efficient microwave absorbers, enabling high temperatures to be achieved readily, thereby facilitating rapid reactions. Short reaction times can afford high yields and low decomposition even with thermally-sensitive compounds.
