Oversupplied West sets sights on eastern market, prices continue to erode

An already ugly newsprint market in terms of supply and demand is becoming uglier for North American producers, contacts said, with no letup in price erosion triggered in November by market weakness that gradually spread eastwards across the USA. "There's probably twice as much capacity as demand in the West," said one western mill source. "Everybody is in defensive mode and we're all guilty of trying to protect business and hang on to our market share. If you lose something here, you get it back there — it's tit for tat."
