Momentum builds for New Year newsprint price hike as Kruger sets $20 Jan. 1 increase for North America

The first push for a North American newsprint price hike in more than two years gathered more steam this week when, according to contacts, Kruger began telling customers it will increase the price of 30-lb newsprint by $20/tonne, effective with Jan. 1 shipments. Kruger's increase matches the first installment of the $40/tonne two-stage price hikes that Resolute Forest Products, White Birch, and Norpae each told customers they will implement in two equal parts ~ the first $20 on Jan. 1 followed by a second $20 on Feb. 1 (P&PW, Dec. 4, p. 1). Catalyst also announced a $20 January hike.
