Expectations that producers would soon try to lift market pulp prices in China came sooner than expected, when Mercer International told customers Wednesday that it was increasing northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) market pulp prices by $20/tonne. In a twist from the usual first of the month approach, Mercer's increase was effective immediately, mid-month, contacts said.
