Ozone-promoted reactions, such as the preparation of aldehydes via the ozonolysis of alkenes, are well-known in organic synthesis. Ozonolysis reactions are a very powerful tool in synthetic chemistry to give access to a broad range of functional groups; ozone reacts chemically with alkenes to give access to either the corresponding aldehydes and alcohols upon reductive work-up or carboxylic acids after oxidative treatment (an interesting example in the use of ozone for the preparation of beta-lactames has recently been published: H. Lu, C. Li J. Org. Lett. 2006, 8, 5365). Ozone-promoted cleavage of alkynes to carboxylic acids and mild oxidation of nitroalkyles to ketones have also been reported.
