West Coast mills aim to end East-West price gap with $20 May 1 increase

The ball was set rolling this week for a third North American newsprint price increase in 2016, with separate announcements by four of the five West Coast producers slating $20/tonne increases on 30-lb (48.8-g) newsprint effective May 1. The increase was led by Norpac, which notified customers on Mar. 29, and subsequently matched by Catalyst, Inland Empire and Resolute Forest Products Mar. 31-Apr. 1, which gave customers the customary 30-day notice. All four firms said the price of lighter basis weight newsprint products would also increase accordingly.
