Pressure is building on US containerboard prices from slow box demand, high inventories, significant new supply, and slowing export demand as the market approaches its seasonally slower yearend period, according to most contacts. There is more talk about discounts on kraft linerboard prices, which have been relatively steady for two and a half years, while medium and recycled containerboard prices remain under downward pressure due to new supply. PPI Pulp & Paper Week is reducing the price of semichemical medium by $15/ton East and West in the current Price Watch to reflect gradual price erosion since the last price reductions.
