Domtar to sell Ariva US; xpedx-Unisource deal still moving ahead, IP says

With a major merger potentially in the next few months or by yearend combining North America's largest two paper distributors Unisource Worldwide and International Paper's (IP) xpedx, Domtar this week entered an agreement to sell its Ariva US distributor business to Central National-Gottesman (CNG). The Domtar/Central National deal, which is to close on July 31, would split Ariva's 500,000 tons/yr, about C$650 mil-lion/yr business and 21 locations into three different parts. Domtar will retain Ariva Canada with six locations in eastern Canada. CNG would acquire Ariva's nine Northeast locations including in metropolitan New York, Philadelphia, and Boston. And CNG would sell Ariva's six Midwest locations to Millcraft Paper, a family-run merchant based in Cleveland.
