Newsprint consumption by US daily newspapers shows ongoing weakness in 2007

Newsprint consumption by US daily newspapers fell 9.1% in January compared with January 2006,according to the Newspaper Assn of America.However it was not a direct comparison because there were four Sundays in January 2007 and five Sundays in January 2006.The volume of newsprint used by the US dailies,the most reliable indicator of newsprint consumption in North America,fell by 54,000 tonnes in January to 537,000 tonnes.At the same time stocks held by US publishers at 800,000 tonnes were 64,000 tonnes or 7.4% lower at the end of January than at the end of December,with inventories averaging 45 days supply compared with 44 days a year earlier.
