Publishers under pressure:newspapers see newsprint costs growing 12% in 2006

Executives from four of the largest daily newspaper publishing groups in the U.S.told a media conference in New York this month that they expect newsprint prices to rise an average of 10%-12% year-over-year in 2006 to possibly their highest level in 10 years.At the UBS conference,executives from the Journal Register said they expected a "high single digits" increase,Gannett anticipated "low teens," The New York Times predicted "11%-13%," and Media General forecast "17%-18%."
