Resolute, White Birch, Norpac all out with $40/tonne two-stage Jan. 1 and Feb. 1 newsprint price increases

North America's newsprint industry was caught by surprise this week when the two largest producers — Resolute Forest Products and White Birch Paper — each told US customers they intend to hike prices $40/tonne starting in the New Year. The initiative came first from by Resolute, which in a Nov. 30 letter said it plans to raise the US price of 30-lb (48.8 gm) newsprint in two $20 installments, the first on Jan. 1 and the second Feb. 1. Resolute's Canadian customers were told their prices would increase by C$45/ tonne effective with Jan. 1 shipments.
