Smurfit-Stone completing ramp of six new corrugators;now plans to shut 40 plants

Reaching the peak of its ambitious capital spending program to overhaul its box plant system,Smurfit-Stone Container(SSCC)has nearly completed the startup of six new corrugators and 21 converting machines in not much more than six months,pres and COO Steven Klinger told analysts on Tuesday.And because of productivity improvements achieved by the new equipment,the company now plans to close 40 box plants by mid-2009,up from its original estimate of more than 30 plants.
