Caustic soda producers captured about half of their announced contract price increase of 115-135/ton due to tight supply, bringing price levels to around 950-960/ton. This represents a more than doubling in price this year and reflects low operating rates at chlor-alkali plants due to reduced demand for chlorine. Use of chlorine in polyvinyl chloride has plunged because of the housing slump, according to Chemical Week.
