Higher prices for selected pulp and paper products could not offset higher energy and fiber costs for the major Canadian pulp,paper,and forest product companies in the first quarter.Price gains on coated recycled board,directory paper,and market pulp were partly offset by the continued strength of the Canadian dollar,lower profitability from wood products operations from a slow US housing market,and continuing high costs for chemicals,energy,and fiber - many of the same demons that has haunted the sector's profitability in Canada since mid-2004.
