U.S.capital spending to rise 5% this year as mills focus on various projects including energy;Canada's spend falls 7%

The U.S.pulp and paper industry will increase capital spending by about 276 million and 5% this year-spending an estimated 5.8 billion that would be the highest total in five years,according to a Pulp & Paper Week survey.The added capital spending for the second straight year comes as U.S.pulp and paper companies focus on reducing operating costs and restructuring operations.The spending is principally aimed at environmental compliance,biomass and cogeneration projects,rebuilding outdated PMs,improving product mix,regular maintenance,and,in the case of tissue,new machines.
