Spain's SAICA talking with independent converters about new lightweight recycled containerboard mill in US East

SAICA, Europe's third largest containerboard producer, is holding discussions about building a large new greenfield recycled mill in the USA in a move which could tilt the North American market more toward lightweight packaging. "We're holding discussions with independent converters in the Midwestern US and then may talk to converters in the Northeast," Ramon Alejandro Balet, chmn of the family-owned company headquartered in Zaragoza, Spain, told PPI Pulp & Paper Week. "It's hard to say how long the process will take of finding the right partner or partners, but the mill would require about 24 months to build once a decision is made to move forward." Company executives this week were on a visit to the eastern US talking to potential independent converter partners.
