AS IT CELEBRATES ITS 40th anniversary, Sappi's Somerset mill (Skowhegan, ME) has a long list of accomplishments of which to be proud, a list that keeps growing. Most recently, in late 2014, it converted to natural gas from oil to fuel its lime kiln. One of the hog fuel boilers uses natural gas as a supplemental fuel although oil may be used at times depending on cost to maintain the steam load. Utilities and recovery manager Bob Dorko says that on a day to day basis, the mill tries to burn biomass exclusively. The benefits are twofold: environmental and economic.
