Chile's environmental evaluation commission has approved Arauco's project to expand its Arauco mill, located in the Biobio region. The mill's current output would jump to 2.1 million tonnes/yr of market pulp, under a $2.1 billion investment. The MAPA project, which in Spanish is the abbreaviation of Arauco's Plant Modernization and Expansion Project, conveys the suspension of a 280,000-tonne/yr eucalyptus line, the revamp of a 506,000-tonne/yr softwood pulp line and the construction of a third 1.5-million tone/yr bleached eucalyptus pulp (BEK) line. The company expects to conclude the project in approximately two years after the construction begins.
