Another disappointing year for world paper demand in 2013; better prospects for 2014?

THE LATEST RISI ESTIMATE for world paper demand in 2013 shows only a 1% increase over 2012, the third consecutive year at this paltry rate of growth. Part of the blame for the underper-formance can be traced to the general economy. Most of the remaining negative comparison is due to the abrupt slowdown in Chinese demand growth relative to the general economic situation. In fact, the most recent estimates coming from the China Paper Association (CPA) indicate that our numbers may still be on the high side even though we are showing just a 3% increase compared to over a 7.5% rise in GDP this year.
