A paper machine is an ideal environment for microorganisms. Microbes colonize machine surfaces, creating undesirable biofilms and deposits. In the machine system, deposits of this nature quickly lead to unwanted side effects that hinder efficient production of paper and board. Web breaks increase, spots and holes appear in the paper, valves get clogged, felts and screens get contaminated, and downtime for wash-ups increases, to list just a few of me consequences of microbial growth.
