Teetering on the edge of change in the ever-advancing field of information technology (IT) can be risky and exhausting, but for Stora Enso North America (SENA) in Port Hawkesbury, N.S., achieving balance has provided numerous advantages. With installation of its No. 2 supercalendered (SC) paper machine in 1998, the mill began pursuing an IT strategy based on Microsoft Windows NT. Since this platform was relatively new to manufacturing environments, the mill also chose a new, NT-based production management system (PMS), becoming the system's first installation.
