North Amerian mills can benefit by using new engineered clays that have lowered costs by European SC mills and that provide improvements in optical and print quality, as well as permeability. Most technical developments in uncoated groundwood supercalendered (SC) papers are aimed at reducing costs by improving paper machine productivity. In Europe, the use of new engineered clays has resulted in very high SC paper machine productivity on high-speed machines, and the use of these fillers could also be of benefit to North American SC mills.
