The effect of safety management systems on continuous improvement of patient safety: The moderating role of safety climate and autonomy

One of the most important activities in hospital is to take initiatives to ensure patient safety. In fact, healthcare organizations implement safety management systems aiming to continuously improve patient safety. In this respect, it is discussed that safety management systems must provide well-defined safety structure and responsibilities, safety procedures and implementation of corrective actions. Further, it is observed as necessary to integrate safety climate and employee autonomy taking into consideration the aspects of employees' perceptions of their work environment and employees' motivation. As a result, this discussion has helped in proposing three hypotheses linking the influence of various management system factors and continuous patient safety improvement. These hypotheses are tested using the data obtained from a study conducted among physicians and nurses. The data are statistically analyzed and conclusions are drawn. (60 refs.)
